Citation:

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Carl Johannes Norstrand, Sergeant Major, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action at Chateau-Thierry, France, June 6, 1918. When his presence was not demanded in the performance of the normal duties of his office, Sergeant Major Norstrand volunteered to rescue wounded men from a field swept by machine-gun fire, and continued this heroic work with the aid of other volunteers until all had been recovered.
